Robert Kekaula

Robert Kekaula (1965-2021)was a prominent Hawaiian sports media legend and broadcaster. He was widely known for calling University of Hawai'i (UH) football games on television and radio for over 25 years, serving as a play-by-play announcer and color analyst. He was one of the voices of Hawai'i sports who really wanted to promote the local teams with love, especially the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors, with all his heart. He was always wearing bright aloha shirts to show people that he was going out there on that camera, being big and friendly, while expressing himself in his cool and collected deep voice that made him a good storyteller for sports recaps. He was sort of like the captain of the UH Fandom where he Coached everyone who was watching TV while he was reporting on games on how to support local sports, becoming a local super fan, and how to tell other people about it.  Aloha for Hawaii Sports: Even though he looked like a big, strong guy, he had some out b...

Jim Leahey "Voice of Hawaii's Home Teams"

Jim Charles "Kimo" Leahey (1942-2022), legendary sports broadcaster who had good humor and carisma. He was curious in nature as he gathered more info as he would help him have his well informed opinion on just about everything. He was known to be funny on TV but way funnier in person, because he had stories that were so very entertaining. Some would call him "The Mayor of Ewa Beach", some "The Voice of UH Sports", and some "Da Sports Uncle".  Father, Chuck Leahey, was also a legendary sports broadcaster who was really good at calling games on the radio, he would go and recreate baseball games just from the stats, without actually being able to see the game. When he was getting stat reports he made the audiences have the feeling of seeming like they were there. He would do many of the Hawaii high school football games and then the Hawaiian Islanders baseball games. He also use to do the UH games at the old stadium (termite palace)... He would meas...

Danielle Tucker "Hawaii's Island Traffic Auntie"

Image
She is one of the longest lasting voices in Hawaii radio and created a space to challenge the social practices, the options of what people could do, and would go places where some would never dare to walk in the world of sound. She definitely is the voice of traffic reports, the kids that grew up listening to her would be the next generation, a new generation listening to her. Later on with people who heard her voice they immediately knew it was going to be about the traffic, but there was so much more to her story that brought her to that point. It also can not be overlooked that the way that her pronunciations were really good made her stand out, and there would always be options of where to go, but it was just very easy to follow and was one of the best at announcements. What many would come to learn is that she would look at different sides of a topic, that some might overlook, she would touch on those points for full coverage of a topic discussion. She always knows the key things,...
