Garlic Shrimp Burgers
Shrimp Burger have become a familiar comfort of a burger with chunks of shrimp that are both beloved by tourists and locals alike. They offer a way to sample delicious seafood without needing to dive into more unfamiliar dishes while still making a person feel like its well-suited for Hawaii's climate and lifestyle of the beach culture there — light, refreshing, and perfect for eating while you're enjoying a park, a late night evening, a beach day or out exploring. Shrimp burgers might not be exclusive to Hawaii, but their status as a local favorite dish can be attributed to the combination of Hawaii’s rich seafood culture, its Drive-In culture
Famous Shrimp places, a place that was famous for it was Byron’s Drive-In version of it. Plate Lunch places on the islands have taken the combination of shrimp sautéed in butter and garlic, then served with rice, and flavors the plate with three particular flavors from the lunch wagons: garlic herb butter, sweet and spicy butter, and hot spicy butter. There were all sorts of people eating shrimp in multiple ways with Sauteed Shrimp, Fried Shrimp, and Breaded Shrimp, so it went from burger to plate lunch. While it was most identified as a plate lunch dish it eventually would see its return to the burger both inside the islands at Local Restaurants and outside the islands in places like Japan.
Competing: The burgers that would have to compete with the rest of the market would have to focus on being "Fried" and the heat is strong from the invading cuisines from the East coast and the West coast. What would it take to take on these companies that have brought the flavors of Kentucky, Louisiana, and California to the forefront against Hawaii Cuisine. Those making food in Hawaii would have to be taking these advances in the market as lessons rather than victim mentality of a takeover. The competition would be those like Popeyes, Chick-Fil-A, and KFC, essentially the beginnings of the Great American Chicken Sandwich War that had spread to Hawaii.
To change up the menu the Shrimp has been far more famous in Hawaii with its fry legacy than the chicken as it has been at the beginning of Drive-In culture with Shrimp Burgers. The level of marketing with the Hawaii Tourism Authority and McDonalds Japan, it has brought the attention to make something deeper in the cuisine that doesn't only nodd's at the past, but takes it to the next level.
