J.Lyn "The Vocal Visionary"

Description: Jaslyn Loftin, aka "J.Lyn", Jasilyn, Jasalyn, Josalyn, Jazzy (born 1996) on Oahu, is a Hawaii singer, songwriter, musician, music publishing, music teacher, producer, and talent developer. Her style is R&B, Pop, Acoustic, Lo-fi, Hip-Hop, Indie-Pop, and EDM. She is regarded as one of Hawaii's upcoming hit makers who is developing the R&B scene with many others. She has been an inspiration of passing down music knowledge to her students. She is known for her live performances and vocal range.

Founding Member of soLUXE:

Family of Music: She would be listening to what the family enjoyed would be songs coming out of the speakers, most notably Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, which the whole household just loved. The family would play a key role in introducing music the the kids with people talking about music and the traditional music playing get together in Hawaii called "Kanikapila". The family always had music playing on the weekends when the kids were home and that is where the family jam sessions would happen. They was in their Mililani home where the grandkids played guitar, ukulele and just played music and sing, laugh and on some days sing for their grandma which she loved, her parents loved, and everyone had a night of joy.

"I really don’t ask for much, I just want to make music a way of life for me. No side jobs. Just THIS my whole life." -Josalyn

Raised in Hawaii, Jaslyn started learning about music with her piano to get an idea of the different sounds at the age of 11. She enjoyed playing with her cousin and they would be playing together as she would toss around ideas about writing songs, until she finally wrote one. By the age of 15 Jaslyn saved up her allowance money from her parents and got herself a guitar. This led to her going into musical theatre and even choir in high school. Highschool was mostly going through the motions and the day would start and then later after school the real day began for Jaslyn. She couldn't wait to get back home and spend time exploring and discovering music and just finding songs that she would want to return to again and again.

Mililani Uka Elementary, she was in the GT ( Gifted Talented) class referred by one of her teachers, and it was then that her GT teacher said she had a gift of “writing” and Jaslyn was a state finalist at 10 years old for her “ don’t be a bully” home made song/video. She was also a student mentor where she mentored younger students there at Mililani Uka, students who needed help in school. Her grandma would always say to her as a young child through college “ one day you will be a teacher like me”.

"You are talking about someone truly special, someone who's not just making waves, but really helping to shape the sound of Hawaii's modern musical future. She's doing music publishing, she's a teacher, a producer, a talent developer – pretty much everything! " -Radio Personality

While continuing listening to the the two Jackson's she would listen to Stevie Wonder intricate chords and melodic progressions that he is known for. Carole King also left quite the impression on the young Jaslyn for her simplicity and effectiveness in lyricism. These inspirations had really added a sense of style of soul to her interests. She really worked at it, so even though she was home taught there were so many things she already knew.

"It wasn’t until high school that I got more serious about making music." -Josalyn

The characteristics, the cultural contexts, the electronically-infused production styles, the modern approach, that early 2000's vibe. It was almost like it was setting her to be prepared for a International Audience that these days is crucial to commercial success, which is what Hawaii tends to prepare you for being an international destination. She was really thinking about the situation change of when getting into music was like being the chosen one or some once in a life time change, until things started to change and people were being found online on Video platforms, Music platforms, and Streaming. There were so many talented people that were trying to play music navigator by trying to figure out where the new road would be to getting known, getting plays, and getting noticed from the dispersion of pop culture into the onlines multiple niche-cultures.

She would attend open mic nights at the "The John Dank Show" Hawaiian Brian’s in 2016. It exposed her to what gigs were like and going on stage and understanding more about the affects of offline presence, so she thought it was good overall, but nothing that really was throttling her forward. It was missing impact and sort of was so-so and nothing special, so she kept chugging along for two years until she got offers to do openings, small gigs, and things like that. She recalls that people would love her old school covers and she would often get requested to cover classic pop hits. She would carry on with her musical arts with all sorts of negativity going on with the name calling and the put downs as they saw in her something that they could never be, so the jealousy was all around. The courage came from getting into the zone, while knowing that there were people talking mad down on her and the complaining would be everywhere. This road seemed harder by the day, but she went with it one step at a time, and breathed in, took another step, breathed again, and finally after struggling she let herself shine. It seemed like there was clouds of darkness around her until she decided to stop letting them surround her as she kept on coming towards her passion.

MELE (music & entertainment learning experience program), after graduating from Mililani High school she attended the Honolulu Community College MELE program at 18 (2015) from a recommendation from the program and was on scholarship. It was where she studied music business and interned with poi planet from 2015 to 2017 where she would work with Tracy Larrua and Guy Hess at the PR Marketing firm. She graduated with an AS in music in 2017, got her first Royalty Statement from BMI, and had proved to herself she was legit. She would go on to sing "Star Spangled Banner" and "Hawaii Ponoi" on graduation day. She approached music as a hobby until she had a conversation with her friends after graduating high school when they talked about their direction of taking their interest into college for music business.

"At Hawaii songwriting festival, I got praise for the first original song I ever completed in terms of writing! From there everything had a domino effect." -Jaslyn

Richard Je Harris, he was a music producer and Josalyn met him in 2015 at  the Hawaii Songwriting Festival. It was a whole event dedicated to songwriting and it ended up changing the entire direction of young Jaslyn's life. Richard had a feeling about Jaslyn and was the sort of guy who just would come up and walk up to you and show some aloha. He went and recognized that this was no ordinary talent and would go on to say to Joslyn "You have something special going on" and later become her first songwriting mentor. There were many mentors who had many great things to say to encourage the next generation of writers like Sue Ennis that really gave Jaslyn the boost she needed to pursue song writing. So it was more of an emotional learning experience that was needed first, before going after all the business stuff in music.

"It was an awesome moment, I recall meeting street like Sean Choo at that festival and they encouraged me to sign up for the open mic so that I could show people who I was. I was one of the last people to sing, and I only wrote one song that I felt confident in showing. When I strung that first few cords I heard the whole room go silent. Everyone’s eyes are on me and I could feel a pin drop. It wasn’t until then that I knew that I wanted to be a songwriter as a career" -Jaslyn

Honolulu Ekiden & Music (2017), Convention Center 11am, at age 21 she would take the stage to one of her biggest events for her, "at the time was my biggest one", she recalls. That was the year there was a star-studded line up: Dirty Heads, Gin Blossoms, the really corny Piko Taro, and the anisong star rock band "FLOW". So she would be playing at this sort of event with all these other names that have already had their own fans, so she would get heard by way more people than her previous performances.

"I use to see her singing and thought about if she did any covers. But after reading about her interest in asian music it would be pretty interesting to see YouTube vids of Japanese R&B in english sung by her. Jazz definitely gives off Hikki vibes (Utada Hikaru)." -Attendee in the Audience

California Days, to pursue professional songwriting she had decided that she was going to make the hard decision to leave her home of Hawaii to go to chase her dreams in California (California Dreamin'). She was ready to get it done, but she had to say "Aloha 'Oe". She would go on to attend the California Institute of the Arts. She moved there for a bit and living in Santa Clarita (2017-2020) where its known as a large-city that is actually safe. Thats where "Six Flags" was and she use to work there, it was a hub for film and TV production "Hollywood North", and there was a night life scene there. Thats where she learned about K-Pop Training Programs from one of her co-worker about a list of: Modeling, Dancing, Singing, Business, Scheduling, and more. Josalyn recalls, "During college days I started doing open mics which turned into my first ever paid gigs!". She entered in what is known as the "Post-Label Era" where labels are no longer at the forefront, but a optional way of getting someones music marketed and developed. So just as many artists in the post-label era, Josalyn went on to be "Independent" as was the new standard of the 2020's.

"I went to California to pursue a bachelor’s in music and that’s where my professional songwriting journey started." -Josalyn

Pandemic, at the height of the Pandemic Jaslyn was doing the social media thing like TikTok and being raised in the transition of Offline to Online  gave her an edge that not everyone had, being self-aware of their presents in both worlds. At this time Southern California was getting really expensive, the school tuition was already through the roof, and the food was as high as they could be. To live in those conditions doing small gigs would be a hard start for anyone, plus the rent was just out of control. So things were getting really hard for anyone who didn't have a lot of money, so for financial reasons it was best she thought to head back home in Hawaii in 2020.

"I was about to be homeless. Dad shipped me back home pretty much." -Jaslyn

Moving back home she didn't want to stay stagnant with the way things were, because people wouldn't really leave their house and there were all sorts of rules. Jaslyn went to her music and contacted her friends she made in LA and they helped her get through everything and she had met a producer friend in Hawaii. She worked on a Chinese hit single that in Hawaii it went completely under the radar without anyone knowing, but online it wouldn't be so silent and at the height of the pandemic TikTok noticed and she got a deal with them. It was a EDM hit “Make Me Forget” by Chinese-Pop Singer, Ann-E1, (250,000 views) on NetEase Cloudmusic, at #6 on China’s Global Song Chart.

Lemon Lunchbox Music Group, Josalyn helps with music publishing and artist development. She founded it in 2024 of January when she had made a realization about local talent in Hawaii. She noticed that a lot of talented and rising musicians didn’t have much access to music business help, so she created the company to fill in the gaps with services in artist development and admin music publishing.

Jasalyn had a reggae wristband and she drew a picture of herself with the wrist band and was going to send it to her. Eli Mac came back from LA and wanted to start in the Reggae scene in Hawaii and Jasalyn did her a solid and let her stay and they lived together for awhile. This is when Jasalyn would make her singing name J.Lyn as she had a discussion one time with Camile Velasco about how rights work and how its attached to a name, so having several names can be helpful to separate searches by genres at times and maybe if it were to sign on a name and rights under that name. On the side Jasalyn would look into books involving spiders as she was interested in them as an Arachnophile she would be inspired to make the singer nickname "Fuzzy Scarlett".

"Eli Mac (reggae artist) used to be my first songwriting mentor as I used to live with her!" -Josalyn

Influences: Jaslyn has been described to have a smooth transition into all sorts of musical genres, styles, and as a navigator of international pop, r&b, and edm. She would go into listening to Filipino music like: OPM, Barbie Almalbis, IV of Spades. and J-Pop, which started to shape her ideas of the possibilities of music with artists like: YUI, Utada Hikaru, and BoA. It would be fascinating, to observe an artist like Jaslyn Loftin whose foundational influences were deeply rooted in the Soul, R&B, and Pop, yet who also exhibits a profound gravitation towards Asian powerhouses such as YUI (Pop-rock, Acoustic), Utada Hikaru (Japanese R&B), and BoA (korea). What would make her unique was having such a remarkably broad musical palate and an astute ear for the nuances of the diverse music landscapes, even overseas (Hawaii, America, Japan), she was listening closely. She would later learn about Korean music, Chinese Music, and all sorts of music around the world.

Voice: Joslyn's voice is described as ethereal, melodic, emotion filled, and nuanced, that transitions from sweetness to dynamic sentimentality. She describes her voice as " I am known for a mixture of sweet, sentimental, and dynamic!".

Songwriting: Jaslyn has described her writing process:

One interviewer said that Jaslyn has a high energy wild side, but most of her work seems almost angelic.
